We get a lot of frequently asked questions. Even more important is that we get a lot of unasked questions. In the F.A.Q. below we attempt to answer both types.
What do you mean by Documentary?
Documentary photography and film making is about making honest images, that are true to the situation we are covering. To make those images, we have to be open to see the story and moments as they are, without our predefined judgement of what they should be. Without us controlling or manipulating the scenes that we are witnessing. When we are open to the story and shoot to capture it as it truly is, magic happens. That is documentary coverage.
What is a moment?
A moment to us is a brief segment of time that has significance to the people in that time or the viewer of that time. That is a pretty broad description, but in essence anything can be a moment as long as it has meaning to you. We find that moments that come naturally and of their own accord are the ones that end up meaning the most to people, so we do not try to create moments. In fact we encourage our brides to make as much time in their wedding day free from photo or wedding tasks so that they can spend time with family and friends. That is when the real moments happen.
What about portraits and formal photography?
We value formal and creative portraits but we feel they should not dominate the wedding day. During the wedding day we photograph both types of portraits. We feel that portraits are important to every wedding. We will work with you and your schedule to fit that time into the day so that it is natural. We help ensure this time is interfering with you spending time with family and friends while still covering our backsides getting those photos for your mom and grandma.
You can check out a small sample of our portrait work in our Portrait Gallery.
Our film makers do not pose or give direction on the wedding day. You have enough of that going on already!
What about photographs of details?
What will my investment be?

Do I have to hire Wirken Films and Wirken Photography?
What other types of work do you do?
We take our documentary approach to a number of other areas because how we work doesn’t just apply to wedding days. When you are focused on people the story can be found anywhere. We do not do standard portraits anymore, but you can hire us for a “Normal Day Session” or a “Birth Session” to document your family. If you are interested in that go ahead and fill out the contact form and let us know in the notes!
We also offer our documentary work to n via our sister company Untold.
