Historic Morton Barns Wedding Photography, Nebraska City

Historic Morton Barns Wedding Photography, Nebraska City

I need to brag a little in this post. Not for personal gain but because of how humbled I was this past weekend while photographing Mollie and Patrick’s Historic Morton Barns wedding in Nebraska City, Nebraska. I knew when Mollie hired me that she had seen some of my work years ago and knew she wanted me as her photographer. What I didn’t know, until her mom told me, was that she found a note from when Mollie was 10 years old that simply read “Tyler Wirken”. I was blown away when I heard that. It was the first time in my 15 year career as a wedding photographer that something like that has happened. Mollie remembered my name from over a decade ago and hired me for her Historic Morton Barns wedding based on a photo she has seen of mine. Now, I always work my hardest for every client I photograph but for some reason after hearing that story on Sunday it felt like the heat was on. The good news is I had a wonderful couple, an amazing venue and fantastic light helping me out all day so in the end I feel very good about rising to Mollie’s expectations. The likes of which I have never seen. Thanks for remembering me Mollie! Here are a few of my favorites as a bit of teaser for Mollie and Patrick as they enjoy their honeymoon. Bali, Indonesia travel photography

Bali, Indonesia travel photography

I rarely shoot for myself. It is something I am trying to do more. So when I was in Bali, Indonesia recently to teach at the Fearless Photographers class I figured it was time to do some Bali, Indonesia travel photography. I am glad I did. I was even inspired by a student at the workshop to get up at dawn and shoot. Something I hardly ever do. It was nice to think in a new way and make pictures based on light, color, composition and waiting for a moment to happen. It was my first time to Asia and my first time making travel photographs in this beautiful country. Even though I was there to teach photography I ended up learning myself. I learned how much I really enjoy making photos. I learned how important it is to take time and exercise another part of my photographic brain and make something for myself. I learned how amazing Asia and Bali, Indonesia is. I am so thankful for this opportunity from my friend Huy Nguyen and Fearless Photographers to not only teach a wonderful group of photographers from Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, United States, Vietnam, India, and Malaysia but to be able to witness and experience this wonderful part of the country....
Wedding at Pennway Place, Kansas City

Wedding at Pennway Place, Kansas City

On the way to her wedding ceremony, Maggie was telling her dad of her worst wedding nightmare. She said she woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavy and hoping it was just that, a nightmare. Here it was her actual wedding day and so far everything was damn near perfect. She was on her way to her Kansas City wedding ceremony where she would marry Ben at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. The sun was shining the weather was perfect and she was ready, but as I sat in the back seat of that car as she was telling her story I wondered if she might still be a bit worried her nightmare would come true. We would have to see what the day brought and if her Kansas City wedding reception at Pennway Place  would go as planned. Being a wedding photographer in Kansas City for the past 14 years I have seen and heard of it all, so I was hoping for her sake all would go according to plan. Her nightmare, the one that startled her awake that night, was that everyone left the reception at around 9:00pm and her and Ben were the only ones left standing in the middle of the dance floor puzzled with what to do next. Thankfully, that could not have been any further from what actually happened on her wedding day. Thanks to the help of one of my favorite bands in Kansas City, Twice on Sunday. In fact the contrary actually on Saturday. Maggie and Ben decided to leave before the party was even over! That dance floor...

Wedding at Counter Point in Kansas City | Teaser Tuesday

Wedding season began for me last Saturday with a special event that took place at Counter Point in the Crossroads in Kansas City, Missouri. I have known and photographed Rachael and her family for years so to be asked to document her wedding to Cade was an honor and the perfect start to my year. Here are the highlights: The ceremony literally lasted 5 minutes There were no toasts, garter or bouquet tosses, no cake cutting, just hours of dancing and partying complete with a rice crispy treat tower They LOVE, I mean LOVE their dog Dora. Even when they were cleaning up poop, pee, and vomit at the end of the night in their wedding clothes. Here are some of my favorite images: Cade feeling a little nervous before the ceremony.Sweet moment during the ring exchange. Waiting for a taxi in downtown Kansas...
