Kansas City Family Photography

Wow what a jam packed fall it has been around here. So much so that I am way behind on my Teaser Tuesday posts. The good news is that I have a few in the Que so keep your eye out for a few weeks full of teasers. For today I give you a little something different. I had the pleasure of documenting the Ward family a couple of weeks ago as part of a Normal Day Session at their house. Years ago I photographed the parents of this awesome family as they were engaged and getting married so it was an honor to be able to see their little family being themselves. Here are a few of my favorite from the shoot. I absolutely love these Normal Day Sessions. Now that we are doing these I cannot see any other way to do family portraits. The moments that present themselves always blow my mind. For more info on our Wirken Photography Normal Day Sessions visit our site. Enjoy the Ward Family This perhaps one of my all time favorite images from a family session. Little guy was not happy with me but it was worth it. Love this moment right before a nap and after breast feeding. These moments pass so fast it is really important to capture...

Family time | Kansas City family photography camping with the Cub Scouts

I realized the other day how long it had been since I blogged about my family. I used to do it all the time till Facebook came around and took all of my Kansas City family photography posts away from our blog. Which is really funny as we are all about family here at Wirken Photography and stress the importance of documenting family in everything we do. So I vow to now make a point to post more about my family and our adventures together. I really feel we all should make it a point to document these times as years down the road these images and moments are going to be priceless. Fortunately, for me documenting my kids is something I love to do. The only problem with it is I am rarely in any of the photos. In the past we have had friends of mine come and document a day in the life and us to ensure my kids, down the road, don’t wonder why their dad was missing all those years. I can’t tell you enough how important I think documenting your family in a truly natural way is. Years ago I started doing what we call Normal Day sessions for families instead of typical family portraits and the results are incredible. I cherish the photos of my family that my friends have made for us. The ability to capture moments that would never arise in a normal portrait session is unreal. I love being able to offer a different approach to Kansas City family photography to my clients. Here are a few images I...

Cristina + Joel | Kansas City wedding photography

The first time I met Cristina and Joel in person was in Amsterdam. They currently live there and I happened to be there at a speaking engagement so we had lunch. It was such an easy lunch and I felt like I had been friends with them for years. That really made the difference on their wedding in my opinion. They way they welcome and love people is astounding. It was a glorious wedding. Here is a run down of Cristina and Joel’s story: She is from Seville, Spain He is from Kansas They met in Malaysia They now live in Amsterdam They had a fantastic wedding in Kansas City with folks from all over the world in attendance There was moon light, dancing, ducks, a tent, one of the best first dances I have seen, amazing speeches, and candy. Plus I found out I shoot better when I have a glass or two of mid afternoon sangria from La Bodega. Enjoy! The info: Planner/designer: Kim Ho/You’re invited Church: Sacred Heart Guadelupe Church Reception site: The Kelly Gallery   The photos: I love this photo of Cristina with her dad and daughter right before leaving for the ceremony. Joel says hello to his daughter upon seeing her at the church. Cristina and her dad wait in the limo for the call to head down the aisle. I love how he was squeezing her hand to tightly.  ...

Noah | A preview of senior portrait session in Kansas City at Shawnee Mission Park

My highly guarded secret for a successful senior portrait session consists of the following:  a high school senior, a pick-up truck with its perfect imperfections, a black dog with lots of energy, and good light. Luckily, Noah brought all those elements with him to the portrait shoot.  We had so much fun trying different things with the time constraint that Noah had that afternoon because he had to drive back home before dark and he didn’t want to get a ticket for driving with a broken head light. Now that the secret is out of the bag,  I have to go to my basement to brew a new secret ingredient for the next senior portrait shoot....
