New Orleans Audubon Aquarium of the Americas family photography

Hello world! It has been a while since I blogged a Normal Day documentary family session. Here are a few teasers of a Normal Day session with one of my photography mentor students Cyd and her family in New Orleans. I spent the afternoon with them as they visited the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans, Louisiana. I loved it and was honored they flew me down to document them. For more info on our family sessions and how we approach them visit our site- http://www.wirkenphoto.com/families/ Enjoy!...

Best Kansas City Wedding photos 2016 | Celebrating love in 2016

Happy 2017 from Wirken Photography! We hope your year is starting out wonderful. Ours has been a bit crazy hence this best of Kansas City wedding photos of 2016 post coming so late. But as they say better late than never. Tyler had a blast last year working with such wonderful clients. We know all photographers say they love their clients but it truly is what makes the difference for us at Wirken Photography. The trust that is given to us from our clients is paramount to making us one of the luckiest wedding photographers in Kansas City. There is simply no way Tyler could do what he does without that trust. Not only do our clients trust him to be present during sometimes intimate moments but more importantly they trust the decisions he is making on a wedding day allowing him to make the best photos possible. That relationship is crucial and we cannot thank our wonderful couples enough for allowing us to stretch our creativity and really take some risks that more often than not turn into huge rewards. With that we have painstakingly gone through all of our weddings from 2016 and are thrilled to present the rewards of all of that trust. 2016that started on Valentines day and ended on New Years Eve and included cities like Kansas City, Charlotte, Topeka, Edgerton, Kansas, Lees Summit, Brooklyn, New York, and Columbia, Missouri. Thank you from us at Wirken and here’s to 2017!                           ...
Kansas City family photography | The Collum family Normal Day Session

Kansas City family photography | The Collum family Normal Day Session

There is nothing normal about our Normal Day Sessions and that is what I love most about them. Family photos for years have been the thing that most families dread. Parents trying to force their kids to be a certain way. Kids doing everything they can to not be that way. It is usually a bit of a nightmare. Then the photos all seem to look the same. No matter how hard you try as a photographer they all seem to be the same. This, in the end, is why I love our Normal Day Sessions. NOTHING is ever the same from session to session. Being able to witness a family as they are in their natural environment is what being a family photographer in Kansas City is all about for me. The Collum family agreed and asked me to spend an afternoon with them as they hung out at home on a perfect fall evening. It was simple. No special clothes to buy. No need to make the house perfect. All they had to do was they normally do and it was perfect. They built puzzles, dug in the backyard for treasure, picked tomatoes, ate spaghetti, and of course has a dance party. I was there to document it without any interference. That is how you make the perfect Kansas City family “portrait” in our opinion. Enjoy a few of my favorite images. This is literally the first photo I made that day. Siblings.  When your dad is a musician you get the best dance parties complete with rotating lights. Mom and daughter snuggles after a...
Kansas City Family Photography | Teaser Tuesday

Kansas City Family Photography | Teaser Tuesday

I love being busy photographing family life in Kansas City. I especially love it when it is for people close to me. Kenny and Sarah live right around the corner from us so not only was this the first shoot I have walked to it was a joy to witness their family life for an afternoon. Sarah is pregnant and expecting their second child any day now so they wanted me to document them and their son Colton before they become a family of four. So we recently got together so I could spend an afternoon with them for a Normal day session at their home. Over all the years of me being a family photographer in Kansas City I have learned what I like best is to simply document a family rather than posing them. Approaching Kansas City family photography in this way allows for moments to happen that nobody could ever think of. The results are often humorous and certainly always surprising. Kenny, Sarah, and Colton did not disappoint. Enjoy a few of my favorite images from my afternoon with my neighbors. Fire safety starts early. 🙂 Dinner time involves doing whatever you can to get a three year-old to eat including celebrating when it happens. As I said goodbye I couldn’t resist shooting one more frame while they were in the doorway. Kinda felt like a maternity...
Kansas City Birth Photography

Kansas City Birth Photography

Today’s Teaser Tuesday is a special one. There is nothing more rewarding than being trusted to document the first day of a person’s life. I get the honor of being trusted with one of the best days of people’s lives being a Kansas City wedding photographer but it is rare to be trusted with documenting both a wedding and a birth for the same client. Fortunately it has happened often for me as I love doing birth photography in Kansas City. I especially love when my past wedding clients ask me to make photos that what many have said are more important than their wedding photos. Kate and Michael had an amazing wedding in Kansas City and have an equally amazing family so it was a wonderful homecoming of sorts when I walked into the room that day their son was to be born. The beautiful and equally nerve racking thing about births is that they are 100% unpredictable and anything can happen. Some birth shoots I have been on take 0nly but a few hours and things go exactly as planned and some you just need to ride it out and see what happens. This shoot was one that we had to ride it out and see what happened. I find that to be one of the best things about being a birth photographer. I like the uncertainty of it all. Good thing as Kate and Mike’s little one was determined to take us on a crazy long ride before he made his entrance. It is never easy as a mom to hear the news that the birth...
Kansas City family photography | A little impromptu Mother’s day celebration in the rain

Kansas City family photography | A little impromptu Mother’s day celebration in the rain

It’s the little things in life. The moments between the moments that matter. It is what I live for as well as what I look for when I am photographing people. I love spontaneity and I am super thankful I happened to have my real cameras at home this past Mother’s day. We had just returned from breakfast with Pam for mother’s day and I was on the phone with my dad. It was pouring rain and I heard laughter coming from the front yard. I ran out to see my wife and our two boys having a ball soaking wet. I love these photos so much. There is nothing more that I want than to have happy kids enjoying life and learning how to be free which seems to be getting harder and harder these days. To Pam, thanks for being such a wonderful mom who shows our boys what life is all about....
