Kansas City Birth Photographer | Teaser Tuesday Welcoming Ellie

Kansas City Birth Photographer | Teaser Tuesday Welcoming Ellie

I had my phone by my bed just in case. Sure as the world it rang at 7:00am on a Sunday. Amy was on the line. “Change of plans. I am heading into an emergency C-section within the hour. Can you make it?” I jumped out of bed cleaned myself up and grabbed my gear. On the way John, Amy’s husband, texted me to go straight to the OR. I pushed the gas a little harder. I had plenty of time. No worries almost there. The last thing I ever expected was to be stuck at a light 2 minutes from the hospital by a marathon and a man on a cane painfully making his way across the street. I couldn’t believe it. What luck. Luckily a space between runners opened up and with the man with the cane just passed my bumper the cop waved me through. I made it with 5 minutes to spare before John and I were rushed into the OR to witness baby Ellie’s intro to the world. Today’s Kansas City Birth story had a happy ending. I made it. Baby was healthy and mom and dad have a family. Being trusted to witness and photograph a birth is the utmost for me. It is even more meaningful when I have been their wedding photographer. Being able to be a Kansas City birth photographer for so many of my couples is astounding to me. The fact that they trust me with their most precious of life events is incredible. I have known Amy since I was a kid. We lived on the same block....

Today’s Teaser Tuesday is a special one. There is nothing more rewarding than being trusted to document the first day of a person’s life. I get the honor of being trusted with one of the best days of people’s lives being a Kansas City wedding photographer but it is rare to be trusted with documenting both a wedding and a birth for the same client. Fortunately it has happened often for me as I love doing birth photography in Kansas City. I especially love when my past wedding clients ask me to make photos that what many have said are more important than their wedding photos. Kate and Michael had an amazing wedding in Kansas City and have an equally amazing family so it was a wonderful homecoming of sorts when I walked into the room that day their son was to be born. The beautiful and equally nerve racking thing about births is that they are 100% unpredictable and anything can happen. Some birth shoots I have been on take 0nly but a few hours and things go exactly as planned and some you just need to ride it out and see what happens. This shoot was one that we had to ride it out and see what happened. I find that to be one of the best things about being a birth photographer. I like the uncertainty of it all. Good thing as Kate and Mike’s little one was determined to take us on a crazy long ride before he made his entrance. It is never easy as a mom to hear the news that the birth...

Wow what a jam packed fall it has been around here. So much so that I am way behind on my Teaser Tuesday posts. The good news is that I have a few in the Que so keep your eye out for a few weeks full of teasers. For today I give you a little something different. I had the pleasure of documenting the Ward family a couple of weeks ago as part of a Normal Day Session at their house. Years ago I photographed the parents of this awesome family as they were engaged and getting married so it was an honor to be able to see their little family being themselves. Here are a few of my favorite from the shoot. I absolutely love these Normal Day Sessions. Now that we are doing these I cannot see any other way to do family portraits. The moments that present themselves always blow my mind. For more info on our Wirken Photography Normal Day Sessions visit our site. Enjoy the Ward Family This perhaps one of my all time favorite images from a family session. Little guy was not happy with me but it was worth it. Love this moment right before a nap and after breast feeding. These moments pass so fast it is really important to capture...

I love documenting anything that involves people and one of my favorite things is to be a birth photographer in Kansas City.  It still amazes me each and every time I witness it. How cool would it be to have a set of images of your first day alive? Unreal. I have had the honor of photographing Holly and Michael’s wedding, the birth of their first child, and now when they welcomed Raleigh into the world. Here are a few of favorite images as a little teaser....

Welcoming Robert | Kansas City Birth Photography

I had the pleasure of playing Kansas City birth photographer for the third time on Wednesday of this week for the awesome Berry family. I have been there for now all three births for this family. It was honor to witness their third child Robert being born at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Here are a few of my favorites to tide over the proud parents till I get the rest of the images done. I love being able to provide birth photography in Kansas City and witness such an amazing time in a families life. Love this image of Nora, their oldest, upon meeting her new...
