Webster House Wedding

Webster House Wedding

I love the Webster House and have been a wedding photographer there for over a decade. So it was a joy to return on Saturday for Alex and Chris’ Kansas City wedding.  This venue was perfect for this couple. It was a night of love, amazing food, humor, and the perfect combo of dancing and socializing. The Webster House excels at all of those. Especially the food. Those risotto balls. To die for. Just ask Chris, the groom, who was dying to get his hands on some all day. All in all it was a wonderful wedding and we wish the best of the luck to Chris and Alex. Enjoy some of my favorites. Teaser Tuesday is...
Historic Morton Barns Wedding Photography, Nebraska City

Historic Morton Barns Wedding Photography, Nebraska City

I need to brag a little in this post. Not for personal gain but because of how humbled I was this past weekend while photographing Mollie and Patrick’s Historic Morton Barns wedding in Nebraska City, Nebraska. I knew when Mollie hired me that she had seen some of my work years ago and knew she wanted me as her photographer. What I didn’t know, until her mom told me, was that she found a note from when Mollie was 10 years old that simply read “Tyler Wirken”. I was blown away when I heard that. It was the first time in my 15 year career as a wedding photographer that something like that has happened. Mollie remembered my name from over a decade ago and hired me for her Historic Morton Barns wedding based on a photo she has seen of mine. Now, I always work my hardest for every client I photograph but for some reason after hearing that story on Sunday it felt like the heat was on. The good news is I had a wonderful couple, an amazing venue and fantastic light helping me out all day so in the end I feel very good about rising to Mollie’s expectations. The likes of which I have never seen. Thanks for remembering me Mollie! Here are a few of my favorites as a bit of teaser for Mollie and Patrick as they enjoy their honeymoon. Ceremony and reception: Historic Morton Barns, Arbor Day farm, Nebraska City, Nebraska Wedding Coordinator: Lindsay Martian – Lovestruck Events     The face you make when you accidentally blow out the candle you...
Bali, Indonesia travel photography

Bali, Indonesia travel photography

I rarely shoot for myself. It is something I am trying to do more. So when I was in Bali, Indonesia recently to teach at the Fearless Photographers class I figured it was time to do some Bali, Indonesia travel photography. I am glad I did. I was even inspired by a student at the workshop to get up at dawn and shoot. Something I hardly ever do. It was nice to think in a new way and make pictures based on light, color, composition and waiting for a moment to happen. It was my first time to Asia and my first time making travel photographs in this beautiful country. Even though I was there to teach photography I ended up learning myself. I learned how much I really enjoy making photos. I learned how important it is to take time and exercise another part of my photographic brain and make something for myself. I learned how amazing Asia and Bali, Indonesia is. I am so thankful for this opportunity from my friend Huy Nguyen and Fearless Photographers to not only teach a wonderful group of photographers from Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, United States, Vietnam, India, and Malaysia but to be able to witness and experience this wonderful part of the country....
Kansas City wedding photojournalism

Kansas City wedding photojournalism

For me Kansas City wedding photojournalism is all about story and moments. Over and over again that is what I am drawn to as a photographer. You give me a wedding in Kansas City with story and loaded with moments and I am a happy camper. Katie and Adam’s wedding ceremony at Redemptorist Church and wedding reception at The Carriage Club in Kansas City was such an event. Katie chose her reception venue as it is where she spent many a day as a child and is blocks from the house she grew up in and the church she wanted to get married in was the same church her 92 year-old grandmother got married in. That was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the many stories throughout this very colorful wedding. When I say colorful I mean both in Katie and Adam’s excitement as well as their reception. Studio Dan Meiners provided the amazing color via decor at the Carriage Club and Katie and Adam provided the expressions. I loved watching these two all day and how happy they were. It was hard to pick for this teaser post as Katie’s expressions were endless. The entire day was perfect including the wonderful weather which was no fluke. Katie and Adam partook in an old Irish wedding tradition where you bury a bottle of bourbon on the day where the weather is perfect and what you want for your wedding day. The weather in Kansas City has been record breaking in terms of heat this summer. Crazy as it sounds the hot weather broke just in time...
Kansas City Loose Mansion Wedding Photography

Kansas City Loose Mansion Wedding Photography

Today I am super excited to present my favorite images from Leah and Nevin’s Loose Mansion Wedding in Kansas City. Loose Mansion in Kansas City is one of my favorite wedding venues to work at. I have been a wedding photographer for the past 15 years and the folks at Loose Mansion have always been a joy to work with. I also love the history of the Mansion. It is always so cool to think that at one time Loose Mansion was the private home of Jacob Loose and his wife. The last time I was there I was eating dinner in what used to be their bedroom complete with a small safe that was to keep Mrs. Loose’s jewelry away from thieves. It is fun to be able to work in such a historical place. Lean and Nevin really embraced the history of Loose Mansion buy taking it one step further and having their wedding ceremony at Loose Park in Kansas City. Loose Park is a beautiful plot of land located in midtown Kansas City that was donated by Mrs. Loose in memory of her husband. So it was only fitting that Leah and Nevin had their ceremony at the park and their reception back at the Mansion. Most brides who plan an outdoor dread rain. Not Leah. In fact she seemed to wish for it. We were watching as the radar was showing a massive green and yellow storm come over Kansas City and Loose Park where the ceremony was to take place. At literally the 11th hour Leah decided to make the call and continue with...
